A new road planned to connect highways 91 and 8 near Beaver is set to start about May 1. The 19 mile route will run from the summit of the grade near Beaver to a junction with highway 88, replacing the old Bono Hollow road. It will shorten travel between two valleys and aid livestock movement, with CCC labor from Panguitch. The project spans Iron and Garfield counties, backed by county officials and citizens across Beaver and Piute counties, and aims to provide a year round shortcut to Milford and Bryce Canyon tourist areas.

Frank Stewart, a local merchant, delivered a Sonde-Track automatic radio set from the Ely weather bureau to The News. It was found April 3 by sheepman Frank Levy in Wah Wah valley and mailed to Washington DC. The set traveled about 125 miles from Ely and is one of several high atmospheric instruments. The device, attached to a balloon, drifts until it lands with a parachute release. Rewards of 1 to 5 dollars are paid for returns, depending on condition. The units measure about 8x10x4 inches and appear covered in tin foil.
Gene and Joseph White found a radiosonde at Nada on Sunday April 1 and released at Hly Nevada on April 6. It is being returned to the United States Weather Bureau in Washington D C. Mrs Chesney Lofthouse has come to Nada to be with her husband employed on the railroad here.

W Waddous and Harold Baxter visited Salt Lake City Sunday meeting with representatives of a large eastern concern regarding development of the Copper Ranch mining claim northwest of town leased by Waddoups and Easter from Tintie Lead. Scheelite and other valuable minerals are noted. Frank Emerine becomes section foreman at Nada. Dewight Lynn, UP fireman, is ill in Iron County Hospital from a ruptured appendix. Aaron Jensen returns to Washington with Mrs Jensen and the twins remaining with Mrs P E B Casterline.
Weather summary notes continued heavy moisture with a weekly record of 0.73 inches and April totals rising. Previous April rainfall reached 0.58 inches while readings through mid April show multiple trace and small amounts adding to a first half total of 1.78 inches.
Acting on recommendations from local wildlife groups, Kents Lake in the lower Beaver mountains will open to fishing Sunday May 18. State fish and game commissioner Newell B. Cook announced a season close by June 30 to prevent taint from bottom mud as surface waters warm. Bear Lake and Upper Lake open early. others remain closed until June 15. Dan Gillies, a University of Utah student, visited home over the weekend.
Milford hosts the Past Presidente Parlor No. 20 gathering with five new members joined. Attendees from Salt Lake City and Cedar City joined locals for a meeting at J. P. Holm residence, a 7:30 dinner at Union Pacific dining room, and card games with prizes.
South Milford residents report visits and returns from trips to Idaho California and Utah. Mrs Mitchell Fisher came home after visiting home folks in Darlington Idaho. Mr and Mrs Charles Alfred returned from California with their two sons and families. Airs Reuben Jones and Ian Connell traveled to California for a few days to visit daughter and sister Mrs Eldon Cates. Mr and Mrs Douglas Blackburn of Minersville visited Mes Gene Turner last Wednesday. Wilma Corbridge returned from Red Mountain California where she had resided the last two months. Mr and Mrs Brose Beadshaw visited daughter Mrs Lollah Gilbrein of Murray.
Jena Moury Willame of Milford and Orville Lunn of Cedar City named local attorneys to assist Donald Confit in his trial for first degree murder. Odie Wall J Huyt appointed by Fifth Judicial District to defend Confit who allegedly confessed to the killing of Harold A Thorne near Cedar City. Trial set for May 3 at Parowan with Confit claiming not guilty under Utah law. The body of Thorne was found March 21 by Iron County officers near the Cedar City Modena highway ten miles west of Cedar City on the Escalante Desert edge. Confit reportedly asked to move the trial date to May 26.
CP Manion representing Lions International with headquarters in Chicago met the Jocal Lions club Thursday night of last week. He is a native son of Milford and visited relatives in Minersville and Milford, again the familiar old Lion at the table.
Mrs Gilliam welcomes a new baby boy. Mr and Mrs Carl Ebner with son Don traveled to Salt Lake City for a brief trip. Mr Gooch visited their daughter and her husband Howard Cook. Mr and Mrs James Rollins from Beaver joined Keith and family and Mrs Dalton Fails and kin for Easter in Pine Valley. Clair Gillins and family joined friends at Willow Springs for Easter.
