Portentous London news and foreign briefs from May era
Fragments describe Constantinople and Porte affairs with interpreters and peace talks, Dublin letters noting quiet island conditions, and London scenes with Lord Mayor processions, troop deployments, and political maneuvering. Reports include crimes, fires, smuggling, court cases, and society notices amid a broad cross-section of late 18th century bustle.
York May 22 On the roth iat smuggling vessels seized
York May 22 reports say two smuggling vessels on the Yorkshire coast were seized. 173 half anchors of Geneva were taken by Henry Radley and the Experi ment cutter. T. Armstrong, commander of the Charlotte cutter, led the seizure. A meeting of the commissioners noted improvements to the river Ouse and ordered immediate notice for paying off bond debts, with further tonnage reductions under review. Mrs Lawson of Moorby died aged many years. A resident of Wigan is said to be 138 with a son 104 and a cooper father still at work. The York contractor launched a new ship, the Knaresborough, in breezy river weather.
