Webworms Attack Virginia Trees In Epidemic Year
In southwest Virginia the fall webworm is severely damaging shade and forest trees. Large silken webs cling to branch tips and leaves may be eaten entirely. Pale yellowish caterpillars inhabit torn webs, with 25 to 100 larvae found per web. Sourwood, hickory, walnut and cherry are commonly affected. weather and fewer natural enemies may drive the epidemic. A spray of six teaspoons Bey by per gallon water is advised for ornamental and shade trees, though forest spraying is not practical.
