A strong earthquake followed by a large fire devastates Yokohama City. Many casualties reported as residents seek refuge on ships in the harbor. U.S. citizens in Tokyo and Yokohama areas fear for loved ones and business ties. Cable communication efforts to Yokohama are underway but intermittent.
The J and XN has completed a winter coal stock at the tracks north of the city. About 4500 tons have been moved to an area beside the rails to serve locomotives this branch will use through the winter. Most coal unloaded by hand with a crew, crane used early on then moved to Four Mile. Days Green Property John Sprote buys George Green home on Manchester Ave and 26th St through Ed Patterson agency.
The four miles of road between Lena and Conwood in Harlan County were completed by Moguin-Sproles construction on August 1 and inspected August 25. The unfinished section is praised as the county’s best road, on par with Kentucky roads, under Federal Act suppression. C P Davidson assisted the work as city engineer.

Milwaukee a Sept 1 veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic will witness a large land and sea sham battle at the Sept 27 encampment. About 35 000 attendees expected with 1 000 housed locally. The display will use Lake Michigan waterfront amphitheatre with hydroplanes bombing planes and naval paraphernalia joined by U S Army detachments and Wisconsin Guardsmen.
Luis Angel Firpo, an Italian-Argentine emigrant, rises to challenge heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey on September 14 at Palo Group. A powerful, rugged fighter with a varied past from stevedore to amateur to pro, Firpo is seen as a dangerous contender and national hero in Argentina and boxing circles.

Greece appeals to the League of Nations for intervention as Great Britain signals possible arbitration and readiness to act if Italy rejects league arbitration. Camp Dixie Myrtle girls decline to participate in a tag day fund raiser for a joint Cub House with Boy Scouts. They later enjoyed a picnic at Pump Station, Dutch concert by the fire, and an ott cushioned dance at the boat house. The Lancers Quadrille and Virginia Reel are being learned, a chapel service is scheduled, four visitors registered, and all girls report a splendid time.
The Middlesboro Merchants association directs a 7:20 P M Monday directors meeting in the National Bank directors room. A general 7:30 P M Tuesday meeting at the Elks home invites AML wowders to attend for discussion of important business.
