Raleigh May 19 Six persons are dead and six injured when Seaboard passenger train number four crashed into a freight at Apex sixteen miles south of Raleigh Late last night The dead include Henry Jones Raleigh news butcher George Meador Raleigh brakeman Joe Cotton Raleigh brakeman Mary Matthews and two unidentified negroes Engineer W G O Daniel suffered a crushed skull and is not expected to survive Officials began an inquiry to determine fault The passenger train was reportedly traveling about twenty five miles per hour The wreckage left the cars badly demolished
Frau Anna Bohm, age 70, stands among the celebrated members of the Berlin Woman's Swimming Club. Over the last six decades she has won numerous competitions and remains an active swimmer, continuing to contribute to the sport in Berlin.
A Washington dispatch to the Louisville Post reports Langley’s friends are seriously alarmed by his physical and mental breakdown. Descriptions say his pulse is flagging and his conversation halting, with his general condition described as verging on deplorable.
The 1928 Community Chest report shows less than seven percent of Salvation Army funds stay outside Middlesboro with most used for local relief. $185 supports home mission work, $100 supports headquarters assessments, and $260 goes into a sinking fund for new district buildings. Middlesboro will gain a two story rescue home. Capt Steinhour praises the effort and thanks William Walbrecht. Rev W K McClure to speak at Manning Theatre tonight.
Judge B J Bethurum of Lexington, in Middlesboro for two weeks, appears likely to be the Republican nominee for United States senator from Kentucky without opposition. Senator Richard P Ernst may not seek reelection. Bethurum, a former circuit judge, is a staunch pro prohibition advocate who pledges strict liquor law enforcement and constitutional fidelity. He is recuperating from indigestion and enjoying Middlesboro, where he has many friends and golfs at the country club.
A baby boy named Robert Lytton Maddox Jr was born yesterday afternoon to Mr and Mrs R L Maddox. The newborn weighs nine pounds and both mother and baby are reported to be doing nicely.
The Kiwanis Club hosts an oratorical contest to award the best high school speaker. Event set for Friday night at 8 in the Central School auditorium with students performing orations and musical numbers as judges from Lincoln Memorial University oversee. Admission is twenty five cents.
The Court of Appeals will hear arguments on the constitutionality of the 75 million state bond issue Friday May 30, announced Chief Justice Sampson. The original hearing date was moved from tomorrow due to scheduling in other cases.
One hundred twenty five men work daily at Liberty Coal and Coke mines under guard after a clash between non union miners and opponents. The company keeps a watchful stance for any recurrence as civil officers patrol the camp and guards guard mining property. Deputy Sheriff Burrel Smith of Middlesboro now serves on the patrol.
Woodrow Braden eight year old son of J C Braiten of Claiborne county and farmer was killed instantly when a truck plunged down a thirty foot embankment on the Maynarsville Tazewell pike near Barren creek. His ten year old brother Walter Braden sustained a crushed skull and was not expected to survive. The truck was driven by a Mr Johnson of Claiborne county who said the boys clung to the back as he attempted to turn at a narrow spot and drove down the embankment.
CYNTHIANA May 19 Joseph B. Kimbrough farmer of Poindexter county area was defending while fishing in the Licking River near his home. He disappeared after leaving early and was found partially submerged in shallow water near a bend. Kimbrough had fainting spells and it is believed an attack may have caused his fall into the river. His dog was lying on the bank nearby.
Senator Sterling of South Dakota, a Republican member of the Senate investigative committee, says the Montana grand jury indictment of Senator Wheeler was justified. He adds the inquiry should not judge guilt but leave it to the courts, and finds Wheeler’s frame-up claim unproven.
Springfield, Mass May 19 Action on the Methodist Episcopal conference stance toward war was postponed. Delegates, unhappy with the funding committee’s recommendations, voted to appoint a special committee to draft a new proposal and report next Friday. The majority urges church separation from all wars while the minority allows war only in self defense of humanity.
The Middlesboro Edgewood road bus operated by Andy Wilder burned completely on Edgewood road near the fair grounds Saturday night. Passenger Mrs Audie Ridener was slightly burned on the foot and back. three other occupants escaped unharmed. The fire started in the engine area and the driver halted the vehicle when flames appeared through the floor. With no extinguisher or fighting equipment, the bus woodswork burned in minutes. the car was reportedly not insured.
The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is mounted on wheels for quick removal from Independence Hall in case of fire. This aligns with new regulations designating the bell as the first article to be moved. Guards train in rapid handling. a no-basement rubbish rule and relocating the heating plant to a separate cellar precede an automatic sprinkling system.
Arthur Chapman twenty two formerly of Middlesboro was killed by a single assailant near his Loyal home Saturday night at 7 20 o clock. A witness says a man fired nine shots as Chapman walked with him. Sheriff J H Blair of Harlan county follows the trail. The shooter is unnamed but believed a railroad worker who bore a grudge. Chapman was well regarded and employed in the Loyal supply house. His burial planned at Big Stone Gap after services at Biggerstaff home. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw withdraws motion for retrial as Thaw nears freedom in Pitts, prep for insanity decision. Senate overrides the soldiers bonus veto, with White House talks and a possible roll call tonight. A telegram from J M Robison to A D DeBusk of the local post notes expected passage early next week.
New York May 19 John E Edgerton of Lebanon Tenn president of the National Association of Manufacturers told a convention that business conditions among all basic industries were at a low ebb and that most manufacturers expect a revival after the presidential election.
Helen Gwynne of Indianapolis retiring president of the National Industrial Assembly urges gaudy attire and bobbed hair for working girls to attract husbands and advance in business. She spoke at a Young Women's Christian Association convention attended by 30,000 factory workers in six parts of the country.
In West Pikeville on Tuesday night Harris on White known as Dollar, 84, and Mrs Jemima Wolford, 64, were married at T Stiltner's home. Both had prior marriages and many great grand children. Perry Wolford built and furnished a home for them where they began housekeeping. The ceremony was conducted by Rev J M Cochran.
Major F. S. Helburn return ed from Frankfort where a State Highway Commission meeting studied the effect of an appellate court ruling on road contracts. It was decided that contracts let before December 1 would be valid, with bidding likely next week and lettings planned for July. Helburn noted current contracts entered since December 1 are unaffected and cited bond and fund figures from 1920 to 1924. He warned the court may rule on the $75,000,000 bond test case, and praised the detour and repair work by North Carolina boosters as a key outlet to the north and south.
Frankfort May 19 W H A Shanks auditor of public account announced that all road warrants are payable by the state treasury. Contractors bankers and the general public are relieved as many contractors feared bankruptcy due to invalidated warrants under the Court of Appeals and Attorney General rules.
Judge J R Sampson travels to Frankfort for the presentation to the Court of Appeals of a portrait of his father Judge William Sampson, former chief justice in 1886. Grandsons William and J E Sampson of Harlan, their father Judge J R Sampson, Mrs J 2 Wheat of San Antonio Texas, and another granddaughter support the presentation.
Mrs F M Gordon in Middlesboro has learned of the death Friday night in Columbus Georgia of her nephew by marriage Charles Atwell Williams. Williams leaves his wife Hone Moody and son. the family last visited Middlesboro in the summer of 1921 at the Gordon home.
Nonolulu May 19 Three persons are unaccounted for after a violent explosion in the crater of Kilauea volcano Hawaii. The missing include Miss Molly Thomas district horse and Ua soldiers unnamed. The trio were seated on the rim of a vast crater pit before the blast.
Miss Helen Aitken leads special demonstrations of scientific cooking on Hotpoint electric ranges at the Kentucky Utilities company sales room. The domestic science graduate showcases modern cookery and proves the superiority of electric range cooking. Women are invited to attend 9:30–11:30 am and 2–6:30 pm. H. P. Broughton from Hotpoint sales will answer questions about ranges.
Three American army airplanes circling the globe landed at an island in the Kuriles after a 500 mile leg. The flight continued with further legs and elapsed hours described by Associated Press dispatches.
