Sergeant Earnest Wilson reports new openings for recruits in the Philippine and Hawaiian Islands. Earnest Hooks recently enlisted and is stationed at Fort Thomas.
Regular meeting of the Oniska Tribe followed by a dance at Booneway Inn at 9 p.m. The Junior Senior Panquet at the high school and performances entitled Souls For Sale and a Virginia Entertainers concert at Manning Theatre are listed as city happenings.
Hutcheson and John Miller filed for postmaster at the local office, with about three others believed in contention. The winner, chosen by Congress and appointed by the Postmaster General on the congressman's recommendation, will take office August 20 after Charles B. Cooke's term ends. Both candidates are respected businessmen and friends of the congressman. Tritcheson, the current assistant postmaster, has twenty two years of postal work. Appointment is expected in early August, with all applications due by May 18.
Pineville ex police chief Buster Roberts, who recently left jail, is due in circuit court May 28 on an assault charge connected to Alvis Toward. A deputy sheriff was seen summoning witnesses in Middlesboro while Roberts remains at large rumored to be in Tennessee. county officers continue to search.
Four half pints of whiskey found in a suitcase carried by John Carey of Combs Tennessee led to his arrest by Policeman C McYeory and Alderman DeTsusk. Carey claimed the grip and fled into a store but was located and jailed. Judge Charles Weed allegedly refused to issue a warrant promptly, later Magistrate Charles Smyth issued the warrant. Carey remained in custody as the investigation proceeded. Mrs J R Hoe visits daughter Mrs Fred Whitcomb at Poor Fork.

Chief H E Ball cites certificates from two physicians stating Montgomery suffers from tuberculosis, a reason given for his release and continued street appearances. Kentucky statutes warn jailers to imprison legally committed prisoners and outline misfeasance penalties for duty violations.
Bold Browning faced a preliminary hearing on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. County Judge J. Bingham bound Browning over to the grand jury and set a 1000 appearance bond and 500 peace bond. The complainant was Marsee who testified Browning struck him with a shotgun near Fern Take. Browning remains jailed.
Gastineau, deputy sheriff of the county, received a six month jail term for liquor possession after a federal raid on his establishment. Willie Ball and Tim Ball drew $500 bonds on similar charges. Judge Cockrum presided. sixty days to arrange business affairs before service. No appeal noted.
H. Lee Monroe is held on a charge of passing worthless checks. Trial before Magistrate Charles G. Smyth is set for tomorrow morning. Piedmont hotel proprietor R. B. Roberts alleges void checks for 70 dollars as board bill payment, with BR. Carmack named on some checks. William Costello and others travel to Louisville for the Derby tomorrow.
In Henderson on May 18 the trial of Laralie Noffsinger for a new murder charge against her husband Gus Noffsinger was continued to May 28. She admitted to a bond of 10,000 dollars. Ollie Ubbonis was convicted and sentenced to life for the elder Noffsinger and testified before the grand jury which returned the new indictment.
Policeman Yeary and A L De Husk report from London that about twenty five cases involve local defendants. Trials continue through the week with most not yet tried. Only one acquittal is noted and guilty defendants face fines from fifty to five hundred dollars under Judge Cockram.
Churchill Downs expects the biggest Derby crowd in history for the forty-ninth Kentucky Derby with fair skies, a fast track, and special trains from Chicago and New York. General Manager Matt J. Winn says reservations are swamped and plans add room for at least 20 000 more spectators. Favorites include Huchamment Pickster Chicky with Greentreet Stable Rialto Cherry Pie and Vigil winner Nassar.
A broad drive for the Community Chest kicks off with posters to be displayed in shop windows and two hundred banners intended for private homes. Commandant C. Cuthberk of the Salvation Army volunteers to affix signs to autos as a key outreach. Large street corner signs and a huge thermometer will track progress toward the $17,000 goal.
Harlan May 18 Wester Wands colored man was shot and killed by another colored man, identified as Martin, at Coxton Tuesday night. The two men had long been enemies and the quarrel led to the shooting. Wood was struck twice in the head. Marth escaped and is at large.
T R 1TH will deliver the commencement address at Vawell's Yelley Thigh School graduating exercises tonight. Mon night he will address Lee County Institute in Ewing and next Thursday he speaks at a banquet of the Gemifellowship Class in Knoxville Whittle Springs.
Claud D. Minor former president of the Kentucky bankers association was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary after a circuit court jury convicted him of diverting bonds deposited in the People's State Bank of Perryville which he directed while the bank closed by the state banking commission. Defense plans a new trial. The charge related to the Perryville bank failure.
Iva B. Adams of Preble was appointed United States Senator to succeed the late Samuel D. Nicholson. Adams, an attorney and son of former Governor Adams, is a 48 year old Democrat.
John J. Tigert of Washington, United States Commissioner of Education, will address the University of Kentucky at the fifty sixth annual commencement on Wednesday June 13. Tigert once taught and coached at Kentucky. Local weather forecast: showers tonight and Saturday with little temperature change.
Panic-stricken audience of 300 at a Camden area Cleveland school commencement exploded into flames after an oil lamp toppled a stage. A crowded stairway collapsed under weight, trapping and burning dozens including whole families. Final toll reaches at least seventy dead with many unclaimed.
The F. P. Scales repair shop at the corner of Lothbury avenue and Twentieth street has been closed for several days. Work is now at the other shop. J. W. Scales says no reopening plans exist. The place is used for storing cars and its mechanics have moved to the other shop.
The Rev. Charles Stewart of Bristol Tennessee will visit over the weekend with Mr and Mrs A B Gloster. Morning and evening services will be held at St Marys Episcopal Church on Sunday.
Associated Press reports that Anne Schneider age 61 and her brother George age 50 hanged themselves at their Louisville home yesterday. Police said Schneider built a gearfold in the pantry for his sister then hanged himself after she died. Officials cite possible state-wide despondency over health as context.
