Prison Guards Wounded In South Carolina Prison Break
Three inmates at the Central Correctional Institution in Columbia wounded a guard and took another hostage in a failed escape attempt. The hostage was held for about four hours before release after two prisoners surrendered, while a third inmate fled the Maximum Detention Retraining Center but remained inside the prison walls. The escape party used homemade weapons and prompted a citywide search for Rev. G Lindsay, a 23 year old with a prior 1974 escape, who was later recaptured in Greenville, Oklahoma authorities said. The incident ended with two prisoners surrendering around 4 30 a.m. after assurances they would not be shot by guards.

Bell School System Extends Year, Sets June 3 End Date
Bell County School Board amends the calendar to make up 12 days lost to snow and flooding, moving the final day to June 3. The board rehired most teachers, except first year instructors and Esther Mazon who resigned, approved an audit, opened bids for three replacement school buses, and reappointed George Reece as treasurer with a $280,000 bond. They planned coal bid notices, noted roof repairs at Harmony Wards Chapel and Cabbage Schools and Hell High Gym, and ordered tempered glass for doors to meet fire marshal requirements.
