President oalidge vetoed the pension bill, sending a message to Congress stating no conditions justify the burden on taxpayers. He argued the nation must balance justice to pensioners with taxpayers’ needs and urged restraint.
President Coolidge will nominate William Butler of Massachusetts to head the Republican National Committee if he is renominated at the Cleveland convention. The White House release says Butler would join the new committee as chairman after preconvention duty and strong planning for the 1924 campaign.
Bankfort Kentucky May 3 bus in state show improving conditions after a mary inspection. Joseph Leopold secretary of the Southern Division of Chamber of Commerce of the United States says conditions in Kentucky appear excellent and indicate progress. He cites good Southwest prospects and favorable cattle and farm sectors. Leopold plans to attend the Cleveland meeting of the Chamber of Commerce after meetings with civic representatives in Dallas.
Preas Bankport May 3 Governor today appointed M. E. Pusey of Highland as executive Secretary of the highway commission. The move names Pusey to lead highway affairs amid state efforts to reorganize road oversight.
Frankfort May. Uncle Nathan Justice and Aunt Florence, both aged 82, attended the ceremony for the eight ninth Maxenwald two teacher Negro school at Kam 10 Flos counts. McHenry Rhoads reported that 28 of 30 students were descendants of the couple, with many whites present from Floyd and Johnson counties. Professor Taylor urged prompt Rosenwald aid applications to meet the June 40th deadline.
Sacramento woman files for divorce after alleging her husband carried liquor to bed nightly and drank freely. Mrs Belle Ballentine claims she protested, and he told her to find a new bed as intoxication continued.

The tobacco growers commission representing Burley and dark tobacco associations sailed from New York to Europe to lift a boycott on American tobacco and study marketing conditions abroad. Albert F. Slater secretary to former Pennsylvania prohibition chief McConnell was held on 2500 bail in Philadelphia Federal Court. He faces charges of conspiring with Congressman John Langley to illegally remove whisky from Belle of Anderson Distillery at Lawrenceburg. Ibra m W. Renner, former permit chief, was discharged in the same case.

An Interstate Commerce Commission examiner’s report urges discontinuing the Pullman surcharge as duplicated charges inflate costs. The report notes passengers pay for a higher class of service while railroads seek extra revenue, and recommends consolidating charges into one Pullman fare. Arguments before the commission are scheduled for May 8.

Frankfort May 3 Associated Press reports Kentucky county clerks must begin collecting a recording tax on the principal of mortgages that do not mature within five years. The tax previously applied to indebtedness per $160, now directs assessment on the fixed amount lent rather than principal plus interest, following a Court of Appeals opinion upheld by Chief Justice Sampson.
Among docket items the Court of Appeals lists cases involving Walling Creek Collieries Co versus Wari and Marshall in Harlan, Wagner Coal Co against Gray guardian in Harlan, with motions to strike, responses, and a brief deadline. The Cuban government asked Washington to supply arms for both its forces and revolutionists as violence grows in Santa Clara Province. The State Department approved the request and authorized arms to be promptly placed at Cuban authorities. St Pauls capital trust and savings bank, with deposits of 5,001,000, was ordered closed today by State Superintendent A J Weigel. The bank, organized in 1900, failed due to frozen assets mainly from Montana and North Dakota mortgages, as authorities noted economic pressures and asset depletion.
Johnson City Tennessee May 3 A new $1 million textile plant will sit on a site near the Southern Railroad, bringing about 600 jobs in velveteen dress goods and related textiles. John H Bord of Williston Massachusetts announced the selection after visiting several locations, with construction to begin soon as negotiations with local chamber of commerce continue since December. John Myers home site, 16 acres, is under consideration for expanded facilities as the city seeks further factory development.
