Washington based report notes Americans who filed early will see first rebate checks by mid May. IRS officials say refunds and rebates may combine into a single check, with some receiving around $380 by mid May and possibly June for those near April 15. The largest gains come for families of four earning about $20,000 with unemployment, child care, and home purchase plans.
President Ford signed a 24.8 billion tax cut and set aims for Congress to pass an energy program by May Day. He toured Elk Hills oil reserve 110 miles north of Los Angeles to plan civilian use and a 1 billion barrel reserve while keeping 100 million for the military. Navy and Standard Oil share control of Elk Hills, with civilian development to involve other firms. Ford commented on Da Nang’s fall as a human tragedy and urged civic concern for refugees. He golfed with Leon Palma Earl Blaik and Frank Capra then hosted a private dinner for former California Governor Reagan and his wife.
Kentucky State Police arrested Chester Vaughn 31 of Cannon on a murder charge after his father Nathan Vaughn 77 was shot twice in his Artemus mobile home between 4 and 4 30 Sunday. One witness was the elder Vaughn’s wife. Vaughn is jailed in Bell County.
Henry Hendrickson, 52, of Fourmile died at Pineville Community Hospital from a single .38 caliber gunshot wound to the chest. His stepmother Ester Hendrickson, 67, was charged with the shooting at her home in front of one unnamed witness. The Bell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating with no motive released. Ester Hendrickson is jailed in Bell County.
Hay Stevens a 36 year old Nashville recording artist and television personality, was hospitalized for observation in Jennie Stuart Hospital after his Mercedes overturned on a flooded Ky h17 near Hopkinsville. Also injured were his brother John Ragsdale of Nashville and Don J Williams of Sherman Oaks, Calif., identified as Andy Williams's brother. Continued on Page.
Matt H. Baker, 55, of 1217 Snowdon Knoxville Tennessee, former Middlesboro businessman, operated Rennebaum Motor Co until 1955, then managed Cumberland Mountain Hotel. He later worked in Knoxville autos and with Knox Federal Savings and Loan Association. Funeral details appear in today obituary section.
Communist gunners from the beaches halted the Da Nang refugee evacuation. North Vietnamese and Viet Cong warned no ships or planes would enter the area without permission as three charter vessels were forced to suspend operations with 20,000 refugees aboard. Saigon seeks UN intervention while U.S. ships resume evacuation toward Cam Ranh Bay amid broader battlefield gains for the Communists.
Reported incident aboard the Pioneer Contender off Da Nang describes South Vietnamese marines and soldiers forcing their way aboard while evacuating civilians. Passengers say looting, injuries to civilians, and a fatality occurred as Marines clashed with U S crew and refugees. President Ford photographer David Kennerly witnessed the assault from an Air America helicopter.
Lon Nol plans to leave Cambodia this week amid advancing rebel forces and siege conditions around Phnom Penh. Sources say he may depart via Utapao, while Long Boret and U.S. diplomats pressed for concessions before any exit. Rebels widened pressure as government troops reinforced near Phnom Penh and losses were reported along the Mekong region.
Police charged James A Ruppert, 40, with aggravated murder after a two story Hamilton, Ohio home shooting left eleven dead during a Easter gathering. Eight children among the victims included Leonard Jr Michael David Ann Carol Thomas John and Theresa.
City police arrested two men after a fight in Jerry's Parking Lot on North 12th Street. Chet Turner of Noetown remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds, while Sean Shackleford of Winchester Avenue was treated and released for a stabbing wound. Each man was charged with first degree assault on complaints signed by the other. Police continue the investigation into the argument cause.
