Mrs Gunn Led in Developing Middlesboro Civic Work
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Lelia Bowen Gunn, a Middlesboro pioneer in cultural and civic advancement. She helped found the Carnegie Library, the Women’s Club, and the Middlesboro PTA, and campaigned for secret ballot voting. Born in Covington Ky in 1831, she moved to Middlesboro in 1908 with her husband William Gunn, a coal superintendent. She active in public health and women’s groups, endured arthritis from 1893 and strokes beginning in 1951, dying after four and a half years in Peewee Valley Hospital.

Three Cubans In Hospital After Protest Strike
Three Cuban rebels captured last Thursday were moved to Mercy Hospital in Brownsville Texas with colds and malnutrition. Fourteen other crewmen and rebels, mostly naturalized Americans and New York residents, continued a four day refusal to eat in protest of their doomed expedition to support Batista. The doctor said most of the prisoners had not eaten for two days prior to arrival.

Obituary and funeral rites for Fayette Wale McNew of Speedwell
Funeral services for Fayette Wale McNew of Speedwell were held Saturday at 2:30 p m at Yoakum Chapel with Brother Alvin Holt and the Rev Bud Williford officiating. Burial followed at the McNew Cemetery near Speedwell. Pallbearers were Charlie McNew Alvis McNew Carl McNew Walter McNew Burt McNew. Flower bearers were Shirley Mayes Nancy Lewis and Charity Lewin. In charge, Cawood Funeral Home. Mattie West Essesary of Detroit Michigan died March 29 in a Detroit hospital at age 83. She was born in Claiborne County, daughter of Tad and Jane Singleton West. She was married to David Essary 45 years ago, he preceded her 14 years ago. She lived in Detroit for 25 years, member of First Baptist Church in Detroit. Body arrives and remains at Caywood Funeral Home where family will receive friends. Survived by sons David William Horace Essary of Detroit. daughters John Lang Middlesboro Wayns Russell and Al Britlat of Detroit Arthur Horton of Illinois. Step-sons Herbert Essary Monroe Aaron Clarence and Son Essary of Detroit. step-daughters Mrs James West Monroe and Mrs Hill Carter Middlesboro. six sisters Martha Stob Margraves Middlesboro Mrs Andy Venable of Tennessee Mrs Aaron Essary of Detroit and Mrs Will Gibbon of Corbin, many grandchildren. Graveside service Wednesday at 3 in Trish Cemetery Tazewell with Reverend Dalton Patterson officiating. Pallbearers listed.
