Five thousand miners in District 23 United Mine Workers prepared to strike at four o clock due to operators rejecting a one year contract and seeking two years. Engineers and pump men stay at posts while most miners expect to remain on jobs if conditions hold.
Charles Yeary aged 27 died at his Exeter avenue home at 6 this morning after a brief illness. He was gassed in France during World War I and had been in poor health since. He is survived by his father William Yeary five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 pm with Rev. J Anderson of Big Stone Gap officiating. Interment in Yeary Chapel cemetery.
J. M. Laswel deputy collector of internal revenues and his associate Deputy Johnson conducted the regular monthly check up in Middlesboro yesterday. The visit aimed at ensuring proper revenue collection and compliance during the inspection.
Pineville reports a man from Elys named Dan Deans was struck and killed by a freight train around 6 am while walking along the tracks toward Pineville. The collision caused severe injuries and delayed rail traffic. his age is given as 33 to 40, with no children.

Louisville March 31 The Louisville Times reports Chief Prohibition Agent Green Miller moved most Kentucky agents to Tennessee after Judge Walter Evans ruled that automobiles could not be searched without a search warrant. Two Kentucky agents remain to observe cars they believe carry liquor and check for visible keys as vehicles pass.
The Herrin mine riots defense presented a letter alleged from guard Sherman Holmes to his ex wife claiming ten machine guns were planted around the mine and guards numbered about one hundred. The letter describes rifles, rate of fire, and waiting to shoot anyone who sticks heads over the hills during eight hour shifts.
The Rt. Rev. Lewis W. Burton, Bishop of Lexington, will arrive tonight to conduct services at St. Marys Episcopal Church tomorrow. He conducts the diocese annual visit to Middlesboro and will stay with Mr. and Mrs Td G Hinks. Burton has led the diocese for twenty six years and is renowned as an orator.

Harrogate Tennessee March 30 The Men’s Bible Class of Harrogate and guests met for dinner in the University library building with about twenty five men present They discussed plans to improve the elementary schools of Nurrogate and a committee was appointed to investigate expenditures The committee includes C P Williams chairman Clay Cunningham and LeRoy Johnson They will confer with county officials and seek cooperation in school improvements One hundred dollars has been raised for the fund with Williams serving as treasurer A follow up meeting is planned in about a month.
