In West Covina a jury finds Finch guilty on first degree murder and conspiracy while Carole is found guilty on conspiracy and murder. Finch vows appeal as Carole and the surgeon face sentencing, with prosecutors alleging a staged crime to aid a divorce.
Billie Jean Johnson, about 40, of Hampton, died when her car went off the road, overturned, and caught fire near Johnson City. Eddie Peters was burned trying to rescue her.
UPI reports NASA satellite Explorer X, launched from Cape Canaveral, is hurtling home from about 112500 miles distance. Scientists will not say if the space lab will reenter and burn up or return to space for another orbit.
GLASGOW Sevlant James Haining recalls watching children plummet from a fourth floor window in a tragic accident. Four year old Marion Hughes died, 7 year old Danny McNeill survived with injuries, and Jean Barclay Waddell, 37, was charged with murder and attempted murder after the incident following a marble game in the building.
Hobart Parsons of Pineville died this morning at Pineville Community Hospital after a several week illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at Darbeth Funeral Home in Finville.
Two Middlesboro High School girls sent by the city Rotary Club to the 25th Annual World Affairs Institute in Cincinnati thanked the club for a valuable experience. Miss Mary Slemp, MHS teacher, led the students Marye Rose Manus and Verrah Brooks in recounting their two day exposure to international relations discussions and the institute’s focus on practical disarmament and United Nations roles.
Gov. Bert Combs will move his office to Lebanon this week as part of bringing state government to the people. A temporary governor's office will operate in the Marion County Courthouse from 3:20 to 4 p.m. CST on Thursday for residents of the 4th Congressional District to ask questions about state government. Combs previously set up temporary offices in Maysfield, Maysville, Manchester and Louisville. No appointments are needed. entry is first come. He will be joined by Wendell H. Ford, Cattie Lou Miller, and department representatives.
TAZEWELL The Claiborne County sheriff's office reports Land Braden of Speedwell was arrested on a manufacturing illegal whiskey charge. A 50 gallon still operation was raided and AW gallons of mash destroyed. Braden was captured at the scene and turned over to federal authorities. Deputy E B Buck Riddle, Deputy Charlie Mountain and federal officers led the operation.
McNew of Middlesboro was arrested yesterday on a warrant accusing him of detaining a minor girl. R. J. Fugate was arrested on a fugitive warrant and turned over to Tennessee authorities. Tate rwell sheriff said a man is wanted for stealing two watches.
Powel Crosley Jr longtime president of the Cincinnati Reds club and noted inventor and entrepreneur died early today at age 74. Known for the Crosley automobile and Crosley Corp radio appliances he built WLW radio into a powerhouse and expanded a wide business empire. Crosley often said he was a man of five jobs, including radio station owner and magnate.
Washington updates show the education subcommittee drafting the administration's 3.24 billion college aid bill. They expect two months of closed work to shape construction loans scholarships and grants while resisting calls for broader state federal grants. The plan highlights a five year 1.5 billion loan program and four year scholarships with up to 50 million annual support.
Thousands of Florida vacationing collegians clashed with police in Fort Lauderdale over a nighttime beer ban and beach conduct. About 100 arrests were reported as a crowd disrupted streets, with a student leader scaling a traffic pole and leading tunes. Authorities warned of National Guard action if order wasn’t restored.
Nashville reports a special election to fill the late Rep. B Carroll Reece seat is scheduled for May 16. Reece died of lung cancer and pneumonia after 35 years in Congress. His widow, a 62 year old candidate, has won early GOP support from about 100 East Tennessee leaders. No Democrat candidate has announced.
WASHINGTON UP I State Insurance Commissioner John R Long Jr said the 1961 Legislature may yield a windfall of several million dollars. The bill requires insurers to turn over unclaimed funds held seven years or more with funds earmarked for the treasury and a special fund to meet later claims.
Dozens of patients at the Veterans Hospital in Sonnson City Tennessee started a memorial fund for late Congressman B Carroll Reece. The fund, turned over to Reece's widow, grew into a community drive with a temporary committee to plan a permanent appeal. Members named include Judge Raymond Campbell T F Dooley Bart Balsor Col E Hart and Mr Mrs Mack Boyl.
At 2 p.m. a worship service will start the gathering followed by the Young People's Tournament for youths 19 and under. Elections for the convention and site selection for 1962 meet will occur in a business session. Youths 17 and 18 will compete in speaking tournaments, with two winners from each afternoon round advancing. A 7 p.m. song service precedes the Final Speak Tournament and Phelps will deliver the closing message. Eugene F. Quinn to handle convention music. lodging pleas issued for Easter visitors.
Extra police guarded the U S Embassy in Lisbon as a Portuguese mob estimated between 15 000 and 200 000 protested U S support for an Angola inquiry. Stone throwing and ink blotches marked the five hour melee. No injuries reported. Authorities used tear gas and mounted guards dispersed the crowd.
