Federal grand jury charges Representative John W Langley of Kentucky with conspiracy and illicit whiskey withdrawal permits in a case tying to Prohibition and Internal Revenue laws. Langley posted a five thousand dollar bond in the District of Columbia Supreme Court, recent proceedings show.
Representative John W. Langler of Kentucky was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to interfere with government opinions. Langler, in his ninth term and chair of the House Buildings and Grounds Committee, is named in one indictment. others named include Ben L. Moses, Harry Bauer of the Walon Drug Co, and Sidney Hela as alleged liquor procurers. The charge carries up to two years in prison and a fine up to $10,000 or both.
The Middlesboro High track team chose Abe Buster as captain after a meeting in Coach Foster Callahan's office. Buster, who competed in multiple races last year, was elected amid team talk of strong meets ahead. The Daugherty committee hearings continued with witnesses Walter Miller and Jess Smith detailing whiskey shipments and past associations involving Armour and Company and others.
Doyle Sctanzell, 45, of Lexington, arrested as eighth person in the ring accused of making Lexington its headquarters. The special grand jury's life was extended to April 5 in circuit court as bankers and garage proprietors were subpoenaed.
Construction of the foot bridge across the canal is underway with work expected to be completed in a few days. Workers, some in the water, are placing upright supports near the ends where the bridge rests on firm concrete bases. William Turnblazer District 19 president said the policy committee will meet Friday to form a proposition. The present agreement covers part of Jellico and Kentucky Tennessee mines with all others to join later. No ratification referendum is planned and John L Lewis has been in Washington since Friday. The District 19 scale is lower than the Central field, but this is not deemed significant locally.
Major Kielvurn returns to Frankfort after a nine session week with the Mate Highway Commission. No new items were raised at the commission today as delegates appeals for the Capitel Cities highway occupied most of the time.
