Shiloh National Park office announces ceremonies on April 7 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War clash fought there. Gov. Ellington will be the featured speaker at the event.
The Tennessee Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld sentences for Negroes convicted of disturbing public worship during an integration attempt. The defendants allegedly attempted to force their way into a religious meeting in Overton Park, Memphis.
Carl Bye Bonelson announced on Wednesday that his position in the powernship race is strongest since he declared candidacy last January 3, with renewed optimism about his campaign in Nassville.
A Circuit Court jury upheld a $2. million water plan for the Reelfoot Indian Creek watershed after a five day trial. Six land owners from the Reelfoot Lake area had appealed the plan, approved last year by Obion County Judge Dan McKinnis, arguing the project was too costly.
The Union Vlavlikers present four student written plays this Friday and Sunday at 3 p.m. in Rector Little Theatre. The Air Force awarded Arc, Inc. a $4.2 million contract for work at the Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma Tennessee. The award confirms the project scope and funding, with Arc to perform specified development tasks at the facility under UPI reporting.

Henry Ward will appear before the Senate Monday to answer charges that the Department of Highways lacks funds to match federal money through 1956 47. Sen Bert Kiser proposed the resolution after attacking Ward and the department citing a Jan 25 letter in which Ward denied moving toward a red. The commissioner argued the state could match federal funds. Kiser said only about 91 million remains for matching tires. He warned the department risks delaying road work and urged restraint on highway spending.
The Lee County Board outlined plans for road projects next year with five district assessors to handle property complaints and a $13 daily salary for assessors. March 28 meetings will include uncit supervisor reps to discuss road improvements. Also noted were a jail repainting need after a state inspection and a $913.27 insurance payout for sheriff vehicles.

Mrs. John Pridemore of Jonesville formerly of Middlesboro died at home last night. Funeral arrangements are not complete. Davidson Funeral Home, Jonesville, is in charge. Ered Davis funeral services for Fred Davis of Cincinnati, Ohio, who died March 3, 1852, were held March 7 at the home of his parents in Frakes, Kentucky. Reverend Robert Davis and Reverend Chester Powers officiated. Interment was in Fuson Cemetery. Cawood Funeral Home assisted.
A speeding express rainstorm toppled a locomotive at the Castelbolognese station in central Italy. Twelve people died and more than 100 were injured as the engine derailed and the baggage car toppled onto sleeping passengers. Survivors described a violent jolt and luggage shower as the cars tipped over.
The Kentucky House of Representatives prepared to consider a bill to raise the ad valorem school tax ceiling in nine counties including Jefferson, Fayette, Campbell, Kenton, Franklin, Boyd, Warren, Gallatin, and McCracken. The measure would lift the $130 minimum to $2 subject to a people’s vote if a petition reaches five percent. The plan, urged by the Governor’s Commission on Education, also notes the state would not change the current $1.50 maximum except where a new school building adds to general tax. Additional bills include raising police judge salaries in second class cities to $4,500 annually.
Reports from Fort Polk say up to 600 members of the 4th Armorer Division were called to active duty last October but Maj. Gen. Harley B. West of Dallas estimated about 200 soldiers assembled. He described them as “a bunch of boys who want to go home.”
