In Pranklington Louisiana two sheriffs Vestry Crain and Wiley Pierce were found dead near a moonshine still. John Murphy and Gideon Restor were arrested after a near thousand strong posse searched the swamp and confessed to murdering the officers. Pierce’s body bore axe mutilation while the pair led authorities to the burial site.
Washington March 6 Representative C Bascom Slemp will keep his Capitol office open after leaving the House Ninth District seat to handle mail and patronage until the new Congress convenes next December. Secretary Lillian Bales of Rose Hill will retain the office and continue to manage his duties. Slemp plans to visit Washington frequently to address pending matters.
Atlanta March 7 Governor Thom Be Hardwick will, after his term ends in June, accept appointment as special federal attorney general to prosecute war fraud cases under the federal department, with the move expected to be announced today.
Roland Nash, a liquor law violator who escaped custody, was captured in Knoxville by Sheriff Joe Saylor and brought to Middlesboro last night. Nash was taken to the Pineville jail this morning. Sheriff Seytor returned to Knoxville. Mooseboro tonight features a prayer meeting at all churches and Viola Dana in Glass Houses at Manning Theatre with the Anderson-Guor Stock Company showing Buffalo Bill chapter.
A Lexington circuit court jury awarded the estate of Victor Adams 15000 against John Clay and Robert Burnett of Paris after Adams, riding a motorcycle, was killed in a collision with their car last April. The jury also awarded passenger William Jennings 1800 for injuries.
Examiners from the Comptroller of the Currency review the books of Springfield National Bank after its closing last night. Cashier A. J. Penfield reportedly attempted suicide as investigators found an apparent $600,000 shortage.
Tim Ball was fined 100 dollars and costs and placed under a 1000 dollar peace bond. He received a sixty day jail sentence in police court yesterday for alleged liquor law violations. Federal prohibition officers and night police found nearly four gallons of liquor in his possession. Preliminary examination was waived at Pineville and he will be tried in federal court on the same charges.
Frankfort report says Captain W. J. Stone, commissioner of Confederate pensions, who is critically ill with pneumonia, showed slight improvement today.
Berlin reports a coup in Bavaria was thwarted as authorities arrested fifteen in Munich. Wing leaders included Dr. Kuehles, once a gas advisor to Munich council, who shot himself. The incident prompted modified martial law to curb movements.
Pineville Motor Company owners W. J. and D. L. Corn establish a gas and air station at the former McDaniel garage on South Twentieth street. The repair department will move to the rear under a new manager. Mr. McDaniel is no longer with Rex Motor. Dr Coran will stay in Middlesboro to manage the business. stock of accessories and parts expected soon. Major Helburn to address Kiwanis at Hotel Cumberland luncheon tomorrow. Louisville live stock market reports show cattle steady, hogs down to 5.40, sheep steady.
Frankfort, Mar 7 Associated Press reports state highway engineer Joe Boggs announced that contractors may post a personal bond equal to 20 percent of the contract price with a certified check or gilt edge collateral. The plan, backed by Attorney General Dawson, aims to curb higher bonding charges from bonding companies and reduce state road costs. The highway commission will implement the rule at its March 14 meeting.
Lawrence Kansas March story reports Egyptian student El-Diiny Mohamed Hamed owns Cairo land with a king's tomb. He requests the tomb be opened seeking treasure similar to Luxor. His father, a former Egyptian army major, would have opened it but believed no treasure lies there. A local dog bite incident is also noted.
Washington dispatch reports fair weather for Kentucky with little temperature change. The outlook calls for continued pleasant conditions tonight and on Thursday ahead.
Postmaster C E Cooke warns wholesale firms and others sending large mail volumes cause delays when they submit parcels late. Mail for train No 28 must be at the post office by 4:30 PM, and parcels for the Haalam line by 4:00 PM. He notes late drop offs by firms push clerks to miss trains and urges morning submission to improve service.
Postmaster Chas. Cooke reports a $200 February gain over last year with a yearly total of $800. If the trend continues the Middlesboro post office is on track for first class rating within two to three years. Despite mine-work suspensions last summer, last year still surpassed 1921, with labor troubles settled and business conditions improving.
A Middelboro husband pretended to be single to enlist in the U S Army and went to Hawaii before his wife learned of the deception. If prosecuted, he faces three to six years in army prison. Fred Whitaker and Clarence Hares of Arthur Tenn enlisted and were sent to Fort Thomas. Thirty-eight applicants were sent off by Sgt George Burk. twenty-four passed final exams. Vacancies exist for service in Hawaii Texas and in the Tenth Infantry at Fort Thomas.
Miss Glynn White, while crossing Nineteenth Street, saw a black cat dash in front of her. She fainted at home, doctors were called, and she remains in serious condition overnight. The incident prompts questions if the cat’s appearance was an omen or mere coincidence.
Three guards overpowered at Edward K. Corry company distillery five miles south of Nicholasville. Bandits in an automobile forced entry to the bonded warehouse, seized thirty five cases of whiskey and escaped. Guard John Reed said the robbers held guards at pistol point and looted the warehouse at leisure.
Dan Gibson, visiting Cincinnati, stays at Gibson hotel and is mistaken for the owner by a stranger who greets him as Gibson. The episode unfolds amid a community note listing venerable residents and sick list names including Captain James Veal and Judge Jacob Sowders.
The Kentucky Baptist Men opened their convention at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville with an address by Rev. J. W. Porter as about 400 delegates attended. State chairman W. S. Farmer presided. Prof. W. I. Davis of Deerpark Baptist Church will address the convention. Courses run 6 to 8 p.m. with out of state teachers Mrs. W. E. Blankenship and Dr. John L. Hill. A free supper is provided each night.

Investigations cite evidence against many men as agents in Louisville pursue details of the plot amid secrecy.
Harlan March 7 one of the year’s largest deals consolidates Banner Fork Coal Darlin county Pond Creek Coal Pike county Dexcar Pocahontas Coal West Virginia and Nuttasbury Smokeless Fuel West Virginia into Fordson Coal Co Delaware for 15 million dollars. Stone Pike county Kentucky to be operating HQ. The Ford interests previously paid about 1 million for Banner Fork and about 10 million for Pond Creek. Ford’s influence boosts regional prosperity.
W H Gibson sold his new house on North Twenty-fifth Street and advertised in the Daily News. C E B Wilson states inquiries were delayed. Residents of Lynch and Roanoke Virginia answered the advertisement.
