President Harding writes to railway official s stating no adequate principle justifies delay in settling last summer shopmen strike. He blames a minority of interests for coal delivery interruptions and unsatisfactory railway conditions in parts of the country.
Only four members attended yesterday morning as Rev W K McClure Rev EB F Burnside Rev W L Powell and Commandant Cuthbert discussed future work. Burnside reported the by-laws are not yet complete but expect completion by the next meeting at 10 o clock Monday March 19 at the city hall or the library building.
President Harding and his party arrived at St Augustine for a vacation stop. Secretary Weeks and his wife remained with the party. Chauncey Depew greeted Harding during a brief stop as the president’s special train continued to Ormond. Mrs Harding appeared on the platform for the first time since leaving Washington.
A fatal shooting occurred when Boyd Pennington killed his brother in law John Brock and then died by suicide, following a large raid on moonshine operations. Pennington had just posted bond in Pineville for a May term appearance in Federal court at London, and he accused Brock of reporting the raid.
Roy Gibbons reports from Chicago on a national survey by the American Library Association noting that half the population lacks library benefits. Only 11 million of 110 million are registered borrowers and 14 states lack traveling library systems. Milam urges citizen backing to boost adult education through accessible books.
Ben Burchfield, accused of murdering his wife and four others in West States street, has a stay of execution set for March 27 after a bill of exceptions was signed by Judge Vines. Papers will go to Knoxville for Supreme Court review with argument on the first Monday in September. Burchfield, captured January 26 in Blountville, appeals after a denied motion for a new trial. Also notes a registration fee change at the post office effective April 1: twenty-five cents for registered letters with $50–$100, ten cents for under $50.
W M Phipps, World War I captain of the 149 Infantry, will graduate from the University of Kentucky in June with high distinction as a special student. He entered four years ago under veterans provisions, lacking entrance credits, after serving in wartime action and pursuing sod technology and farm life. His seven year old grandson will attend the commencement.
Dr. Wilhelm Mayer German ambassador to France died in Munich early today from general weakness. He was recalled from Paris at the start of the Ruhr occupation and traveled against doctors orders before his condition grew serious.
Two men claiming World War II service wounded in Belgium travel Middlesboro seeking charity from the Salvation Army and others. Officials question their credentials as no discharge papers are shown and papers may be pending pension action in Washington. Local police and a Salvation Army representative investigate.
Five vessels anchored off Highlands New Jersey today forming a rum flotilla as tugs loaded liquor. Sixteen vessels believed to carry liquor now join the group along the coast marking an accelerated rum running operation reported by Associated Press.
Howard Young known as the Human Fly fell eight stories while climbing the Hotel Martinique on Broadway. Mrs Young witnessed the accident as a crowd of about 20 000 gathered. dozens of movie cameramen filmed the tragedy. Young, 25, had a history of climbing stunts and had performed for the Red Cross during the war. He muttered I cant make it before the fall.
Mt Sterling March 6 reports say Ovie Helton an 18 year old resisted officers searching for moonshine stills near Pilot Powell County and was shot and killed Friday. Officers captured a large still and four men.
Indianapolis dispatch details Colonel Alvin Owsley’s plan for a fourfold Americanization program by the American Legion. It includes restricting immigration for five years, ending segregated foreign settlements, English and civics education, free night schools, playgrounds, and citizenship instruction, with enforcement through state laws and federal funding requests.
Lexington Ky March 6 Receipts of tobacco by the Burley Tobacco Growers Association continue heavy according to general manager Stone who said advances on tobacco release were about fifteen million in Burley counties, plus four and a half million paid on the final 1921 crop installment.
Anderson of Middlesboro Hardware Co says a Saturday prize sale amounts to a $200 order for Neon Kutter Tools destined for Naples Italy. John Cozzini, a Lynch resident for months, bought two trunks of tools to take home to Italy to start cabinet work. He praises Keen butter tools found in America. Anderson notes Lynch yields the hardware firm’s largest tool sale.
David Chalmer and Miss Peggy Wright, both of Memphis, were married in Los Angeles yesterday after a prior Memphis marriage in 1922 ended by Miss Wright’s December divorce. The couple’s earlier wedding was abrupt and she returned home that night. Wright’s fiancé, Duncan Waller of Mayfield Ky, and his companion Mrs Ruth McElwain Tucker of Memphis were shot and killed five weeks ago on a country road. police have made no arrests.
The remains of Victor Jacobs who died at Norton yesterday morning will be shipped to New York today for burial. He was a resident of New York before moving to Middlesham several years ago. His brother Gus Jacobs lives there. Relatives and friends who attended the funeral will accompany the body to New York. His mother will meet them in Knoxville.
Andy Barnett testified for his father Will Barnett in the Clayhole election murder case in Catlettsburg. He said he saw Les Combs fire the first shot and witnessed George McIntosh fall. The eighth day of trial aimed to send the case to the jury by Friday night.
Ashland March 6 Breathitt county customs are not recognized in Boyd. Thurmond Pillen of Claypole, a witness in Breathitt election conspiracies and murders, was indicted by the grand jury for carrying concealed a deadly weapon after his arrest Friday night on a charge of drunkenness. Napier and Allen were arrested for drunkenness and a gun and cartridges found on Allen. Both paid fines. The police chief noted that carrying pistols is prevalent in Breathitt county but not in Boyd county.
Jones, a Herrin mine riot survivor, identified mob members James Brown and Otis Clark at the murder trial of Hugh Wral lis and five others. He quoted Clark vowing to kill all scabs and wipe out the breed, describing a four mile line of prisoners and a barbed wire fence as the mob fired on inmates. Willis was said to be present during the killings.
Corbin March 6 indictment returns against John Stansberry Ghde Earls and Mrs Dudley Merelton in the Meadows Boarding House bombing of January 20. Stansberry surrenders after learning of the indictment and posts bond. Mrs Merelton, arrested in San Bernardino, is jailed in Williamsburg after bond raised to 3500 on pretrial charges. Attorneys R J Pope and George Morgan linked to rewards from the case.
A Ford car was stolen from W. 7. Evans at Wasiota Sunday afternoon. Mr. Evans was in Middleshore yesterday and furnished the police department with information after which he left for Tazewell where he hoped to get back of the missing car. He has offered a reward for the recovery of it.
