In Jonesville two 17-year-olds convicted in a juvenile hearing for breaking into Dryden High School received very strict probation from Law Circuit Judge Joseph Cridlin. The teens, deemed to show a good attitude and as seniors nearing graduation, must maintain a clean school record and make amends for about $11 in damages from January vandalism and coin-operated machines. Senate hearing hears ATA stance on airline safety
Air Transport Association President Stuart G. Tipton told a Senate subcommittee that current safety is adequate and further drastic action is unnecessary despite recent accidents. He cited a drop in passenger fatality rates from 3.17 to 0.55 per 100 million passenger miles between 1938–40 and 1956–60. The FAA ordered control towers to block takeoffs in extreme weather after the Toledo crash that killed 22, including 16 California players. FAA also tests a new aircraft antenna to warn pilots of impending collisions and feed evasive maneuvers to automatic pilots.
