Utilities to hit ceiling says hearings warn of higher bills

FRANKFONT Ky UPI Testimony before the Interim Joint Committee on Public Utilities and Transportation warned current high utility rates will rise further due to rising fuel costs especially coal and EPA clean air rules. Linda Kubala of the Legislative Research Commission said lawmakers cannot lower rates though a sales tax rollback could be debated. William Sullivan of Henderson predicted rates could reach 2.42 times today by 1535, citing coal costs and EPA rules. He warned about using Montana coal if western Kentucky coal is too costly and urged broad cooperation to live with basic electricity units. The committee discussed EPA strictness, rate relief, PSC decisions, and possible appeals to higher courts.
