Clement Is Backed By News-Sentinel In Senate Bid

The Knoxville News-Sentinel endorsed Gov. Clement for the Democratic nomination to the Senate seat of the late Estes Kefauver. The paper called Clement a natural for a senator and his governorship an asset. It branded charges about extending the 1963 state sales tax as a phony issue and noted opponents Rep. Ross Bass and M. Court of Honor Set by Scouts for Troop 32

An Indian show will be featured at the next Court of Honor for Boy Scout Troop 32 on Aug 29 at the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Wilderness Road Campground amphitheatre. Scoutmaster Arthur Smith says 22 scouts will receive rank advancements and 55 merit badges. Advancements include one Eagle, Life, three Star, three First Class, four Second Class, and three Tenderfoot.

Hospital Volunteer Plans Form in Appalachia Region

FRANKFORT Kentucky Appalachian Regional Hospitals in Kentucky Virginia and West Virginia plan auxiliary volunteer programs. Dr Karl S Klicka president says teens and other community members will connect hospitals with the public training sessions invite ARH representatives to join. Volunteers assist in dressings operating room packs recreation patient meals visitor services mail and library work across ARH sites in Kentucky West Virginia and Virginia. NEW PLANT SCHEDULED Monsanto to build a multi million dollar ammonium phosphate fertilizer plant at Luling Louisiana to produce 240000 tons yearly.

Kentucky man jailed for illegal voter registration in Tennessee

Lester Caudell of Richmod Kentucky was fined 65259 and sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to illegally registering to vote in Tazewell Tennessee. Judge George Malone noted Caudell had registered on July 6, the last day to register for the August 6 county election. County officials warned about the felony risk if a voter casts ballots under unlawful registration.

Savings Bonds Hit 113,672 in Kentucky and Bell County

Bell County June savings of Series E and H bonds reached 418,840 with Kentucky totaling 4,036,108 and six month sales at 27,348,126, 48.4 percent of the annual goal of 356,600. National June sales were 347 million with 136 million in interest on E bonds. Total investment rose to 6200 million with cash value of 47,737 million, up 630 million since 1964.

Optimist clubs in Tennessee plan war on smut literature

In Oak Ridge Tennessee UPI reports Optimist clubs will pledge a statewide campaign against smut literature and pornography on newsstands at a Saturday meeting. Rev Lea Earl Acuff chairman said the effort will be a major project for the coming year. Acuff plans to use clippings from the Knoxville News Sentinel and Memphis Press-Scimitar. A stray line notes four bells can be played in 24 orders.
