An area of tropical low pressure drifts across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico bringing heavy rains from Florida to Louisiana. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say it may not strengthen soon and could dissipate or form a tropical storm named Carolina. An Air Force plane measured winds near 26 mph as it monitored the system, while Blanche weakened after hitting Nova Scotia, bringing rain to the island.

London based reports say Nigerian President Yakubu Gowon was ousted in a military coup. Gowon, 40, was in Kampala at an OAU summit when news of the coup spread through the conference hall.
