Little Leaguers Fall 4-3 in Extra Innings

Barbourville wins 4-3 in seven innings over Middlesboro to claim the Little League title and a district semifinal berth. McCovey Delivers 13th Grand Slam for Giants

Willie McCovey, battling knee injuries, belted his 13th career grand slam in the ninth inning to rally the San Francisco Giants past the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4. The shot capped a 6-run ninth after Dick Dietz and Ken Mendelson sparked the rally. McCovey’s homer followed Mays’ run producing hit. Elsewhere, Chicago beat New York 11-7, Atlanta swept San Diego 8-7 and 1-0, Cincinnati beat Los Angeles 6-2, Montreal topped Houston 3-3, and St. Louis downed Philadelphia 6-1.

Blue Doesn't Win Nor Does He Lose

Vida Blue pitched well with 21 strikeouts in a 12 inning effort but did not get the decision as the Oakland Athletics beat the Cleveland Indians 4 3. Sal Bando redeemed his error with a ninth inning homer and a 12th inning sacrifice fly to win it. Bando also drove in the tying run. Darold Knowles credited with the victory. Blue leads the majors with 18 wins and 208 strikeouts and was pleased with the win rather than personal credit.

Thomas Attacks Dallas Team Officials After Super Bowl Run

Duane Thomas attacked Dallas Cowboys officials at a news conference. He labeled Tom Landry plastic and not a man, called Gil Brandli a liar, and accused Tex Schramm of dishonesty. He demanded seven million dollars, pledged most to black neighborhood programs, and claimed Dallas exploited black players. He warned the team would not reach the Super Bowl again without him.

Rogan Reaches Semifinal in Ladies Club Tourney

Margaret Rogan, a rising MHS senior, advanced to the semifinals by defeating Sue Mars in the quarterfinals and earlier beat Shelley Anderson. She will face the winner of Fannie Tanner and Betty Weller for a finals spot as nine o'clock deadline looms for men’s tournament signups.
