The Army will draft 31,300 men in September and raise July and August calls by 6,000. July and August drafts were increased to 28,500 and 36,600 respectively due to lower enlistments. A late afternoon storm battered the Tri-State area causing isolated power outages and one house destroyed by lightning. A Middlesboro hotel operator says he acted to defend his employer when an Indiana man, George Fisher, 32, shot James Rossner, 31, at the Majestic Hotel. Fisher, charged with shooting with intent to kill, will appear in City Police Court. Rossner is hospitalized with a .38 caliber bullet in the neck. Several other locals face public drunkenness charges. Fisher surrendered to police after the 6:50 pm incident following an argument with a clerk.
ARGYLE Minn a plane released parathion over the town spraying for two hours late Wednesday into today causing evacuations of about 400 residents. A doctor warned the chemical can be fatal if inhaled ingested or absorbed. An antidote was rushed from Minneapolis and help from the Grand Forks Air Force Base to counteract the agent.
Rehearsals start this week for Orlin Corey's adaptation Romans by St Paul to be staged the first two Sundays in August at Laurel Cove Amphitheatre.
