Proposed Merger of Churches Faces Cautious Hope

A proposed merger between the Presbyterian Church in the United States and the Reformed Church in America drew cautious support at a Louisville gathering. Marion DeVeldur, stated clerk of the Reformed Church, said the plan could succeed but faces major issues in restructuring and governance. The conference, with about 125 delegates, aims to produce a union plan by 1968, requiring two thirds of the Reformed Church and three fourths of the Presbyterians for approval. The merged church would be broadly globally oriented and protect local church property for affiliates meeting requirements.
