Washington reports the Civil War Centennial begins at 11 a.m. January 8 with a proclamation by President Eisenhower aired on television and radio. Bells toll nationwide as ceremonies take place in Kentucky Lexington Virginia West Point Annapolis and the Air Force Academy. The Star State West reenactment marks its 80th anniversary on January 9, 7351.

The casket will arrive in Middlesboro Monday morning and be taken to Daywood Funeral Home. At 1 p.m. body travels to Speedwell Tennessee for graveside services at 2:30 p.m. at the family cemetery near the former home of Efr. and Mrs. Horace Russell.
The Rural Electrification Administration announced a $565,000 loan to Evarts Telephone Co. of Farts, Kentucky, to improve service and extend initial service to new subscribers in Harlan County. The article notes the loan will fund the scan and first typewriter sale in the area.
