Funeral services for James D. Lovell of Alexandria Michigan were held yesterday at 1 pm at the Mt Assembly Church of God with ministers officiating. Burial followed at Hoselawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers listed. church choir members served as flower bearers and provided song services with Mona Sue Heck as pianist. Orwood Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Claiborne board approves staff changes and bus route tweaks

The board moved Charles Holt to Speedwell Academy and named Sara Bont as his replacement at Flat Holley. It approved paying Clarence Green $4,600 for a rooting job at Powell Valley School, with prior $4,000 already paid. Ten tons of coal from Greers Chapel were redirected to needy schools. Isolated Browns and Jetsons School operations were discussed, with Riverside School set to stay isolated for three months. Clarence Brooks and Clarence Mustard received $10 monthly raises on a Brown School route extension. Reverend William Newman may use Soldiers Memorial School gym for a church league, bond $30 to cover damages. Sherman Mayes will stay as Ellen Myers principal for the year. Audie Evans hired as Powell Valley High janitor at $150 monthly. Hugh Cope’s route rerouted to Howard’s Quarter and Claiborne County High School with no salary increase.

Mariner 2 Fails To Start Venus Scan Device

The Mariner 2 spacecraft failed to trigger its radar instruments on two initial attempts to start scans as it neared Venus. Morristown couple found freezing in unheated home

In Morristown Tennessee a 56 year old man, James Owen Stapleton, was found dead beside a bed after exposure in an unheated home. His wife, Ky Stapleton, was near death but revived with hospital treatment as temperatures dropped to five below zero. The coroner ruled the death due to exposure.
