Tennessee Education Association plans to roll the $276 pay bonus into next year’s regular salaries for about ten thousand teachers if the 199 Legislature approves. If accepted, starting pay with a bachelor’s degree would rise to $2,925. all other salaries would increase accordingly.

The Tennessee Education Department reports an average teacher salary increase of 4075 dollars for the 1961 62 year, raising overall pay by 236 dollars from last year. Records show 29 9501 teachers employed, with 22 818 women, and degrees including doctorates 34 quiglers 6 248 and 18 076 bachelor degrees, with increases across all categories.

The Air Force aims to launch a small four to five pound monkey into orbit in October and recover it alive to blaze a trail for human astronauts. Lt. Gen. Bernard A Lehviever says the effort would use a Discoverer satellite to carry the simian payload within two months. Rumors of a Soviet orbital attempt loom as House Space Committee chair Gerald Banks cautions the USSR may try in October.
SA Routes order allows Southern Airways to resume flight service on East Tennessee routes formerly run by Southeast Airlines. Kaydon Vali, vice president, says FAA/UF district court order permits immediate scheduling and airport leasing work. Wolfe at Middlesboro was elected first vice president of the Kentucky Alternative Wholesalers Association at its convention in Louisville. T. F. GI of Bowling Green named president, succeeding W. B. Mctseo of Lyndon. Other officers include W. D. Taylor of Lexington as second vice president G. E. Pack Jr. of Paintsville as treasurer and George Wilson of Lexington as executive secretary. State Public Safety Commissioner Glenn Levern urged support for highway safety legislation in the 1912 General Assembly. Directors named George Burton of Corbin and Fred Vesolo of Hazard.
The Pennsylania Railroad announced plans to furlough 52 000 employees and halt passenger and freight service in anticipation of a strike by about 20 000 maintenance workers. The walkout could idle the railroad’s largest facilities nationwide and affect 100s of millions of dollars in activity along routes from New York to St. Louis. The company expects to discontinue long distance passenger reservations next Tuesday and suspend all freight lines, especially perishable cargo, by midweek to allow cargo diversion. About 200 operating and other staff would be furloughed if the strike occurs.

Observers say Lang's only joy is the stump while he accuses McSween of kickback schemes and selling out Huey Long's memory to enrich himself.
The AFL CIO opened a four point program to back its endorsement of the Kennedy Johnson ticket. A Philip Randolph objected to a labor party idea, while Meany urged unity to support Kennedy and Johnson. AFL CIO aimed to increase union voting, publish scorecards, secure $10 per member, and mobilize extra donations.

Wilmington reports additional charges were filed against three more individuals and four others in a stockholders suit seeking Chrysler Corp in receivership. The chancery court took action to compel defendants, many Chrysler officers and directors, to answer the original suit filed August 12. The amended complaint accuses four-time manager at Chrysler of mismanagement and “translucent abuses” causing hundreds of millions in losses, naming Sol A. Dann Karl Vorvath and others from Detroit and New York. It alleges management knowledge of the abuses and ties to contractors surfacing the Chelsea, Michigan, proving grounds with costs charged to Chrysler. Additional amendments cite firms acting as contractors for Eneryaler and related services companies.
The Public Health Service reports fewer paralytic polio cases in early 1983 than in the same period of the prior three years. Nationally, 125 polio cases occurred in the first eight weeks, down from 3,207 cases a year earlier.
Hungary charged Austria with aggressive violations of its sovereignty after a border exchange last Sunday near the Austria Hungary frontier. Austria countered that Hungarian forces fired first, prompting the diplomatic protest routed through U.S. Undersecretary George C. Dillon’s recent visit last month.
