38 Publishers Bid On State School Textbooks
FRANKFORT a total of 38 publishing houses bid to sell the state over some million dollars worth of textbooks to be used during the next four years. The first will be used at the start of the 1958 1959 school year. The State Textbook Commission will meet again Sept 12 with bids studied. Local districts must select texts by April or accept the state list between April 15 25. The state has set aside 1 034 000 to administer the free textbook system for first through eighth grades. Kentucky high school students must buy their own desks. The state spends about 700 000 per year on textbooks for about 485 000 pupils in the first eight grades. One fourth of the texts selected this year adopt texts in reading writing music literature industrial arts home economics business trades and industry and agriculture. Mrs Hazel Mears presided at the meeting and will reconvene Sept 12. Other members of the commission listed attended.
