In YARTRIDGE Kentucky, recovery crews at Scotia AUC Now near Here continue pumping underground water to reach eight entombed workers and three federal inspectors after March explosions. Overcome by wider-than-expected water, progress paused until pumping clears to advance 800 to 600 feet deeper into the 3,800-foot area, with a September target previously set.
Eastern Coal Field reports 1700 miners absent on Wednesday amid scattered back to work in western districts. 7000 miners returned Monday after UMW meetings at Madisonville. Pickets from out of state appeared at entrances, with some districts still idle and officials uncertain how strictly the order is observed. Two Indiana pickets fined in Union County for trespass and public disturbance. District 30 officials issue back to work order in eastern Kentucky as talks continue.
A sniper unleashed gunfire near a Wichita hotel injuring Denise Guseman and others while police opened fire from an adjacent balcony. Victims included Joseph Goulart, 56, a freelance news photographer, and Elmer W. Hensley, 57, a glass company worker. Police pursued motive as details emerged.
U.S. Postmaster General Benjamin Bailar warned against privatizing mail delivery, arguing it would reduce service and favor private firms.
