Government survey shows farm prices lag costs rise
Government figures indicate farm prices rose 3 percent in the month ending July 15 but remain 6 percent higher than a year earlier, unable to offset higher costs for gasoline, fertilizer, machinery, pesticides, and shoes. The cost index shows motor supplies up 3 percent, livestock feed 20 percent, and fertilizer 72 percent, with feeder livestock prices down 5 percent from a year ago. Gasoline costs for farmers averaged 57.9 cents a gallon at retail and 52.4 cents bulk, with regional bulk prices ranging from 45.4 to 56 cents.
