Rankin Ousted Ends Era of Loud Race Baiters in Congress
In Mississippi's first district, Rep. Thomas Abernethy defeated long time provocateur Rep. John Rankin ending 32 years of anti Negro and anti Jewish rhetoric. Despite the win Abernethy is not more liberal, yet his younger stance and softer tone mark a shift from Bilbo Rankin era. Rankin bowed out pledging service to his people while Abernethy praised their long friendship and mutual respect.
