Grove Civic League Anniversary Celebrated in Miami

The Coco nut Grove Slum Clearance Committee marked its third anniversary at Christ Church Parish Hall with Melvin H. Jackson as master of ceremonies. Speakers included Elizabeth Virrick and architect Al Parker. performances by Cliffonia Jackson Jessie Dunn and the Peoples Community Chorus. Miss Erma Lee Williams plans ten months at Yale after leaving Miami September 15 to join Tuskegee Institute nursing program. An invitation extended to attend a University of Miami concert at the Miami Beach auditorium Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Admission varies.

Golf Tourney At Miami Springs Monday

The Cosmopolitan Golf Association sponsors its annual Derby Day golf tournament Monday at Miami Springs Country Club. A Jacksonville team will face Miami in medal play across all classes. Richard Gibson of Coconut Grove defends his crown, with one dollar entries and prizes for first through third in each class. A victory banquet is at nine at the Mary Elizabeth Hotel.

Gunman Killed by House Detective at Rockland Palace

Oscar Bethea of Perrine shot a man at Rockland Palace then was killed by Vernon Harris a Mary Elizabeth hotel private detective who fired after Bethea drew a pistol during arrest attempt. Harvey Jones 23 of NW 63rd Street injured critically at Jackson Memorial hospital. hearing set.

Die, 1 Seriously Injured In Sewer Ditch Cave-In

One worker Solomon Davis died after a sewer ditch cave-in near NE 92nd street and Sixth avenue. C B Griffith suffered severe internal injuries. Both men were employed by Miami city water and sewer to lay a 12 inch main. Rescue squads freed them as the trench reached about 6 feet deep. Davis died the next day and is survived by a son and daughter. Funeral services were set for Saturday at Ebenezer Methodist Church.

Guilty In Slaying Of Blind Man's Wife

An all white jury in Judge Grady Crawford's circuit court found Charles W Wheeler 26 a cemetery caretaker guilty of second degree murder for the June 14 1951 slaying of Louise Williams 35 wife of a blind man with a .22 rifle. The verdict carries 20 years to life and sentencing is set for September 14. The state presented testimony from eight witnesses including Dr Victor Calterin and a cemetery employee who identified the murder weapon. Wheeler previously admitted beating the victim in the afternoon.

Beautician Dies After Beating In Liberty City

Delorise Perry Williams, 27, died at Jackson Memorial hospital after severe blows near Liberty City Pool on August 15. Willie Billing, 23, was arrested on murder charges. he claimed self defense after an argument and said he struck with a 2 by 4 plank. Funeral services were held at Greater Bethel AME church with Rev. Robert A. Jackson officiating. Williams survived by her father Archie Perry, mother Marian Muldrow, sister Mildred Williams, two uncles, five aunts, and other relatives.

Morals Suspect Freed in City Court on Incompetence

Alfred Allen, charged with lewd acts in presence of a 58 year old, is released after Judge Cecil Curry cites prior county judge ruling of incompetence in 1940. State rep George Okell, Allen's attorney and guardian, argued he cannot be tried. Allen released into Okell's custody.
