Drowning and explosion kill Michigan fishing party

Mrs. Carrie Emanuel, longtime Miamian and retired nurse, dies from shock after a boat explosion and fire on Memorial Day. Six others were aboard the Margaret Eulie near Long Key Bridge. two Goulds men drown, one others missing, lone survivor Julius Twine hospitalized in critical condition. The craft, owned by George Donathan, apparently blew up after a gas-water bilge mix. Coast Guard and nearby boats rescued victims. services set for Emanuel and mourners held as the search continued for a missing passenger. Vaccination clinics offered for polio in Dade County.

Miamians to Get Degrees at FAMU commencement

Florida A and M University will award degrees to 294 candidates at the June 4 commencement. Education leads with 148 graduates, arts and sciences 102, followed by Agriculture and home economics 18, engineering and mechanics arts 11, law 1, nursing education 6, aeronautics 1, and graduate school 7. About 2,000 attendees expected for bacalaureate services June 3 and the commencement address by Dr. John W. Davis.

Deacon Ed Shumake Dies At 76 In Miami

Edward Shumake aged 76, a pioneer Miamian who moved from Valdosta, Georgia in 1901, died at home. He served as a firefighter for 51 years, 40 with the East Coast Railroad. Survived by wife Frankie, daughter Mamie Lou Grady of Jersey City, two brothers James and George, two sisters Phyllis Harold and Annie Ballard. Funeral at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. under Richardson Mortuary with Rev. Edward T. Graham officiating.

Bus boycott hits Tallahassee transit profits

The Negro student led boycott spreads from Florida A and M campus to county buses in Tallahassee. Negro riders demand first come first served seating on black lines, Negro drivers, and courtesy from White drivers. Two girls charged with inciting a riot had those charges dropped. Police turn case to university authorities as Steele faces a speeding charge. Only a few Negroes ride during peak hours with 30 cars in the pool serving 13 stations and about 1,200 daily riders.
