Althea Gibson of Florida A and M College breezed to victory in the women's singles final at a international tennis tournament in Dortmund Germany. The report notes a quiet year with no arrests in 1951 and mentions a grand jury intending to investigate local policing and enforcement of bolita laws.
The Dade county grand jury disclosed a full-scale probe into illegal bolita in Miami’s central Negro district. Sidney Berger pledged a thorough graft and laxity inquiry. Veteran patrolmen James Washington R J White LeRoy Smith face questioning along with Capt. James Griffin and Sgt. George Haller. Official records reportedly show few bolita arrests in 1950 and early 1951.
The Dade County Commission declined a federal extension for slum clearance funds, stalling a plan tied to a 419,580 federal grant. Knight of the Miami Housing Authority warned the program aims to clear downtown slums, separate from a separate 15,000,000 public housing effort, leaving the project in question on hold.
Carl Woods 32 of 1611 NW Fifth Ave and Jerry Rushin 49 of Perrine were injured when a stolen station wagon traveled 70 to 80 mph along Quail Roost Drive before failing a curve and hitting a pine tree. Woods was charged with auto theft and both men were taken to Dade County Hospital at Kendall.
Walter Lee Irvin and Samuel Shepperd, both 23, were reindicted by the Lake county grand jury for the 1949 alleged rape near Groveland. Charles Greenlee, 16 at the time, already sentenced to life, did not appeal. Ernest Thomas was killed by a posse days after the attack.
Alvin Drew, 34, nicknamed aD, was jailed on $250 bail after police found heroin concealed in a lipstick case inside his walking cane. He is on parole for burglary and was deemed a positive dope addict by police surgeons after arrest.
Cooper Curry Dixon 20 of Birmingham faces charges of attempted rape in Miami. Dixon was arrested near NE Second Ave and Flagler after a police pursuit linked him to an escape during a Sept 30 1950 vehicle chase. North Miami police identified him as the suspect in the attack on a White woman on NW 127th St. Officers Thurman and Witters chased the fleeing man and the car owner identified Dixon.
Sugar Ray Robinson vows to reclaim the middleweight crown as Randy Turpin, a 23 year old challenger, defeated him in London for the title. A rematch is set for September 6 at the Polo Grounds New York, just weeks before Louis meets Charles at the same venue. Robinson cites fatigue from six fights in six weeks and eye trouble, while praising Turpin as the better fighter that night.
Albany police charged 39 year old James A Wright with raping a 13 year old Negro girl after he claimed to be a Scottsboro defendant. He was arraigned in police court and ordered to stand examination on July 19. Wright, a longtime resident, was jailed. An Andy Wright was among nine Negroes arrested near Scottsboro in 1941 on rape charges.
