Testimony shows Mrs Fair refused to move from the bus middle as white passengers surrounded the vehicle near Mimi ave and Fifth. Driver Fillgan said she caused no disturbance. Judge Snowden's court marks a third such case in Miami since June with subsequent fines and dismissals. G E Graves of the NAACP hailed the ruling.
Jack Baker aged 24 of 422 NW 15th fell from an upstairs landing onto concrete steps Sunday morning and is in critical condition with a fractured skull at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Federal Judge Ernett C Choate ordered Ft Lauderdale to file an answer within 20 days to a suit by four Negro residents seeking equal access to the Municipal Golf Course. Judge denied dismissal and requested no definite statement from plaintiffs. city attorney Julian Ross challenged enforcement and payments. Plaintiffs are represented by Atty G E Graves.
In Tallahassee police began a crackdown on car pool drivers as four bus boycotters were arrested on Wednesday for driving without for hire tags. Rev. K S Dupont and Rev. C K Steele spoke against the action, arguing it will harden resolve for equal bus treatment.
Washington reports two appeals ask the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that found Alabama and Montgomery laws mandating racial segregation on buses unconstitutional. Appeals were filed by the Montgomery Board of Commissioners and by Alabama Attorney General John Patterson for the state Public Service Commission.
A U S court martial in Wuerzburg Germany convicted seven African American soldiers of raping a 15 year old German girl last July in Bamberg woods. The nine officer board deliberated two and a half hours before pronouncing guilt. Sentences expected Friday.
In Pittsburgh the American Federation of Teachers approved a deadline for eight Southern locals to merge their White and Negro units by December 31, 1957. If not integrated, their charters will be revoked. The affected locals include chapters in New Orleans, Chattanooga, and Georgia. Earlier, a proposal to expel nonintegrated Southern units by next March failed to reach a two thirds majority.
A KKK spokesman not named said public speakings and cross burnings are scheduled in Miami Tallahassee and Orlando. The group, calling itself the Florida Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, said it concluded a meeting in Orlando on Sunday reelecting officers and pledging to follow the 1923 constitution and bylaws.
The NAACP and six fathers asked a federal judge to require a clear desegregation process in Dade County public schools. Judge Choate granted a 10 day window to file an amended complaint and signaled possible admission of Black students to white schools this fall if warranted. The case, filed June 12 against the Dade County School Board and Supt. W R Thomas, was dismissed for insufficient facts. Graves criticized Florida's new pupil assignment law as preserving segregation and argued the board must act by color. Registration for unregistered pupils is set for Aug 30 with classes beginning Sept 4.
