National Women Vote To Support Court Decisions Commend Rep Orr's Stand

The National Association of Colored Women's Clubs closed its 30th biennial session here last Friday voting unanimously to engage state federations to push issues toward amicable settlement with officials and legislatures. It endorsed State Representative John Orr's courageous stand at a special legislative session earlier this month and praised his conviction. The group received a $50,000 Sears Roebuck Foundation grant to start a Neighborhood Improvement project in five pilot states for one year. Irene McCoy Gaines was reelected 15th president for a third time. Next session in Detroit, Michigan in 1958. Other convention news on pages 2 3 and 8. The President's Committee on Government Contracts announced two new staff members John Y. Yoshino liaison to state and local governments and George O. Butler Director of Education both assuming duties.

City Extends Elks Meeting Invitation for 1957

Acting mayor B E Hearn Sr extends the invitation via W O Perry to hold the 1957 Grand Lodge convention in Miami with Gov LeRoy Collins and Desmond Kelly backing the effort. Perry cites Los Angeles as this year’s host while preparing for a large Elks gathering. Over 10 000 members are expected to attend the convention, with John Fernandez Booker T Dunn Thomas Rivers among the attendees.

Nixon Appeals to Clergy on Race Relations

Vice President Richard Nixon urged Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist leaders at three Northern Carolina gatherings to help set a moderate path on race relations. He warned that bitterness and tension are mounting as the issue intersects politics and moral ideals.

Jail Woman In Bus Seat Incident

A Miami woman was arrested for disorderly conduct after refusing to move to the rear of a Miami Transit Co bus. Eleanor M. Fair, 31, of 1347 NW Tister, posted $50 bond and was released. Police said she refused orders from the driver and officers at N Miami Ave and Fifth St. Her trial is scheduled for Friday. this is the third similar case in recent months.
