Dawson Saves Moderate Civil Rights Plank for Democrats
Chicago representative William L. Dawson a vice chair of the Democratic party preserved a moderate civil rights plank in the platform preventing a party split. He defended a new approach for Negroes to gain rights arguing for unity and federal action on equal opportunity and anti-lynching measures while avoiding direct calls to specific laws. The move drew praise and criticism and Dawson was seen as key to unity ahead of the convention amid broader South versus inclusion tensions.
