Air Force Uproots Rule Limiting Mothers in Service
Washington AP The Air Force dropped a 1947 rule barring women with children from remaining in active duty after a lawsuit charged sex discrimination. Capt Tommie Sue Smith, a 35 year old divorcee from Johnson City Tennessee, argued the rule forced her to choose between her 8 year old son and her career. The service said the old policy conflicts with women rights and a Pentagon equal rights policy. The change allows women to stay on active duty unless they request discharge due to adopting or gaining custody of a minor child.
