NAACP Could Face Bankrupt Bond Deadline Crisis
A nationwide fund drive failed to cover a 1.64 million appeal bond for a 1.2 million damages award from a Port Gibson boycott. NAACP lawyers race to Wednesday hearing in Jackson to reduce the bond or seek a rehearing. If not posted by Friday, merchants may seize defendants’ property. Muhammad Ali pledged 100000 toward the effort, but officials warn of bankruptcy without funds.
