Farm outlook in 1977 tied to soybean supply and prices
USDA officials led by Don Paarlberg and President Ford say the 1976 soybean harvest will be tight but adequate. A Foreign Agricultural Service article by Alan Holz notes world demand and prices rising, with meat and oil trade not expected to fall in 1977. Continued Demand Could Drive Record Milk Prices
The Agriculture Department cites rising consumer demand for dairy products and a strong wholesale market for butter and cheese as factors pushing farm milk prices toward record highs later this year. December blend price hit 10.20 per 100 pounds, with July and August farm prices at 9.41 and 9.67 per hundredweight, respectively, and analysts expect November–December averages near last year’s peak if wholesale prices hold.

More Red Meat Eaten Prices May Zoom Upward
Americans are eating more red meat per person than in four years and USDA urges shoppers to buy more. Connecticut Democrat Rep. William R. Cotter warns USDA ignores strong indicators that consumer meat prices will rise unacceptably in late 1977 and into 1978, citing feed costs. USDA marketing alerts highlight beef as a current good buy amid ample supplies, with production up 3-5 percent over 1975 and 10 percent above 1973-75 averages, while pork and poultry supplies also rise.
