Republican Byrnes Urges Tax Hike Within Four Years

Washington AP Republican Rep. John Byrnes said the public demand for services means a tax increase will be needed in the next four years. He criticized Nixon for promising no tax hike if re-elected while noting the administration plans a $465 billion debt ceiling through June 30 and a $450 billion current limit that could fall to $400 billion on Oct. 31 without action. The Ways and Means Committee is weighing Nixon’s $250 billion spending ceiling tied to the debt limit.
