Draft Bill Still Faces Filibuster

Washington AP reports Senate supporters of a draft extension bill hold the edge but face a filibuster. A cloture petition by 22 senators followed a 47 26 defeat on tabling. Two thirds of voting senators must approve for cloture. If the first attempt fails, a second petition could lead to a Thursday vote. The measure would extend the draft for two years and fund a 2.4 billion pay raise, despite opposition over a withdrawal deadline amendment. Mansfield led the fight to attach his withdrawal amendment, while Stennis warned passage is essential for security. Mansfield said he would not join a blocking filibuster despite the setback.
