Organic Molecules May Mean Life On Red Planet
Scientists say Viking 2 could prove life on Mars if organics appear in soil samples. Despite Viking 1 results suggesting tantalizing but inconclusive chemistry, researchers warn life might use nonorganics. Viking 2 aims to test organic compounds by Sept. 20 with potential life evidence by Sept. 20. Mondale forecasts a close race, blasting White House policy as he campaigns through Ohio, California, Iowa and Missouri.

Beetles Cut Illinois Corn Crop By 61 Million Dollars
Illinois farmers face estimated losses of 11 million bushels and 61 million dollars from corn rootworm beetles. Dr. Steve Moore of the University of Illinois notes high infestation since the 1960s, with costs rising due to soil treatment and control measures across five million northern acres and 1.5 million southern acres. He cites two beetle varieties, Northern and Western, and suggests crop rotation or postharvest tillage to curb damage while warning of potential soil erosion from full tillage.
