Holes Dot Oklahoma Landscape
Holes from about 200 abandoned zinc and lead mine shafts dot northeastern Oklahoma, mainly in northern Ottawa County. The 1950s to present has seen partial sealing, but many holes remain hazards for visitors, especially children. Estimates place closure costs up to $1,000 per mine, hindering local action.
