Rhodes Opposes ERA Extension

Washington AP. House Republican Leader John Rhodes, who once backed the ERA, now opposes extending the seven year ratification deadline. Thirty five states have approved the amendment, which will die March 22, 1979, unless Congress extends. Rhodes argued timing will settle the issue and extending is unwise. Twenty House members back the extension, with petitions and a task force led by San Antonio Mayor Lila Cockrell joining the push.
