Average Worker Loses 9 Percent of Pay Since 1972
Washington AP reports that from 1972 to April the average American worker saw their buying power drop about 9.4 percent while nominal weekly earnings rose about 18 percent. In 1972 dollars, pay fell from 96.64 to 87.58. Inflation erodes purchasing power, and Ford warned of a 420 billion dollar fiscal 1977 budget without spending cuts. OMB estimates suggest adjusted budgets still show real declines in purchasing power.
