Democrats May Increase Control of State Capitols

In a national view of the 14 governor races, Democrats appear set to expand their grip on state capitols with likely switches in Illinois North Carolina West Virginia and Delaware. Washington and Vermont feature tight races where women seek executive office. Illinois features James R. Thompson favored over Michael Howlett amid tax debates. Utahs Vernon Romney leads Scott Matheson. North Dakota incumbent Democrat Arthur Link faces Richard Elkin with coal policy at stake. North Carolina Democrat James B. Hunt Jr. is favored against David Flaherty. West Virginia favorite John Rockefeller IV faces Cecil Underwood while Delaware Democrat Pierre Dupont IV is likely to beat Sherman Tribbitt. If four close races flip and four switches occur Democrats gain a larger lead in governor margins. Maine has independent James Longley. Missouri Indiana Arkansas complete the slate with Bond Bowen Otis Bowen Pryor.
