Gardener Converts Plant Waste Into Useful Compost
Disposal of leaves and plant material is a growing problem. A compost heap offers a cheap, clean solution using sod, grass clippings, weeds, and other refuse. Avoid diseased material. Build an open bin 3 to 5 feet high and wide, start with leaves, moisten without soaking, add fertilizer and soil, then lime or manure as available. Within days, compost forms for soil improvement.
Composting heap basics from 1970 October guidance
A 1970 note explains starting a compost heap, heat from bacteria, and how moisture and turning affect decomposition. It covers rainfall protection, seasonal turning needs, and a 4 to 12 month timeline with winter slow down, finishing with a soil cap and uses for the finished compost.
