Mansfield Criticizes ABM Action In Defense Bill
Washington AP Senate action on a 19.9 billion military procurement bill faced criticism from Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield who charged excess costs in the Safeguard ABM project and linked the compromise to pet projects of Rep. Mendel Rivers. He accused the House Senate conference of kowtowing to an outside Pentagon client and warned the language shifts weaken defense related research requirements as the measure moves to President Nixon for signing. The bill funds military aid in Southeast Asia, open ended aid to Israel, counsels Soviet encroachment warnings, and finances basic weapon systems amid controversy.
