Court Rules 14th Covers Women's Rights

The Supreme Court unanimously held that arbitrary discrimination against women is unconstitutional. Chief Justice Burger announced the ban on a Idaho law giving men preference in estate administration, marking the first sex discrimination ruling under the 14th Amendment equal protection clause. The decision arrives as Congress and Senate panel consider a proposed equal rights amendment, with unclear impact on that effort. In the Idaho case, Sally Reed, Ada County, lost appointment as administratrix of her son's estate to the law's male preference. Cecil Reed, the father, filed suit.

Gas Rate Boost Request Goes In

Missouri Power and Light Co filed a request for a 666,669 dollar gas rate increase to cover higher Panhandle Eastern Pipeline charges. The action comes after Panhandle rescinded a gas supply cutback order affecting mid Missouri towns. The filing requests an effective date in December and notes the raise adds 48 cents to a five dollar bill, 97 cents to a ten dollar bill, and 1.94 dollars to a twenty dollar bill. MP&L says the change does not add revenue for the utility and that Panhandle’s rates are not yet approved. If refunds are ordered, MP&L would return funds to customers. MP&L has previously refunded 2.6 million dollars to gas customers over the years due to Panhandle increases.
