Steel Strike Threat Looms Over 1971 Talks
United Steelworkers President I W Abel unveiled a 14 page set of demands for the 1971 contract. A cost of living escalator, wage gains, a four day work week, and better pension health benefits are on the table. He said members would strike if needed to win equity, though efforts to avoid a strike continue. The no strike clause remains a factor in bargaining amid union pressure. The last major steel strike was a 116 day shutdown in 1959.
